Plan Your Borrowing with Precision EMI Calculations
Taking out a mortgage, car loan, or personal credit facility represents a significant financial commitment. Understanding how much of your monthly installment goes toward principal repayment versus interest charges is crucial for smart financial planning.
Toolnova Loan EMI Calculator uses standard reducing balance compounding formulas. As you adjust loan amounts, interest rates, or tenures, the calculator immediately updates monthly dues, total interest accrued, and principal proportions.
An interactive breakdown visualizes the balance between principal and interest, while an annual amortization table details principal reduction, interest paid, and remaining balance over time, with one-click CSV export.

Frequently asked questions about Loan EMI Calculator
Common questions about usage, privacy, limits, and browser compatibility.
How is EMI calculated?
EMI is calculated with the reducing-balance formula P x r x (1 + r)^n / ((1 + r)^n - 1), where P is the principal, r is the monthly interest rate, and n is the number of monthly payments. The monthly rate is the annual rate divided by 12 and by 100. Each payment covers that month's interest first, with the rest reducing the principal.
Does a longer loan tenure lower my EMI?
A longer tenure spreads repayment over more months, so each EMI is smaller. However, interest keeps accruing on the outstanding balance for longer, which usually raises the total interest and the overall cost of the loan. Compare the total payment figure, not just the monthly amount, before choosing a tenure.
What is the difference between flat and reducing balance interest?
Flat-rate interest is charged on the full original loan amount for the entire term, so the effective cost is higher than the headline rate suggests. Reducing-balance interest, which this calculator uses, is charged only on the unpaid principal, so it falls as you repay. Most home, car, and personal loans use reducing balance.
Can I download the amortization schedule?
Use the Download CSV button to save the year-by-year schedule, which shows principal paid, interest paid, and the remaining balance. The file opens in Excel, Google Sheets, or Numbers for sorting and further analysis. The on-screen table also breaks the loan down year by year without downloading anything.
How can I reduce the total interest on a loan?
Choosing a shorter tenure usually cuts total interest, though it raises the monthly EMI. Making prepayments, where your lender allows them without penalties, reduces the outstanding principal sooner and can save interest. Ask your lender how prepayments are applied before assuming a specific saving.
Does the result include fees, insurance, or taxes?
The calculator uses only the loan amount, annual interest rate, and tenure you enter, so processing fees, insurance, and taxes are not included. Your lender's quote may therefore be higher than the EMI shown here. Treat the result as a planning estimate and check the full cost with the lender.
