Natural Browser-Based Text to Speech Synthesis
Listening to written content is one of the most effective ways to proofread articles, study educational materials, consume long articles while multitasking, and enhance digital accessibility for users with visual impairments or reading difficulties.
Toolnova Text to Speech leverages the W3C Web Speech Synthesis API built directly into modern web browsers. This gives you instant access to your operating system’s high-quality neural and natural voice engines without installing extensions or subscribing to expensive API services.
Customize your listening experience with real-time speed adjustments (from deliberate 0.5x slow-reading to 2.0x speed-listening) and pitch tuning. Because it runs locally, audio streams immediately with zero server buffering.
Key features & capabilities
Frequently asked questions about Text to Speech (TTS)
Common questions about usage, privacy, limits, and browser compatibility.
Can I download the speech as an MP3?
The download button produces a WAV file, not an MP3. Audio is generated on your device with a built-in speech engine and saved directly, so there is no upload step. If you need MP3, import the WAV into an audio editor or converter afterward.
What languages and voices can I choose?
Live playback lists every voice installed on your operating system and browser, so the selection varies by device and may include several English accents plus other languages. The downloadable WAV uses the tool's own built-in voices, which cover English (US and UK), Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Turkish, and Chinese. It picks the closest match to the voice you selected.
Why does the downloaded audio sound different from the preview?
Live playback uses your system's modern neural voices, while the WAV file is rendered by an offline eSpeak-based engine bundled with the tool. The download picks the nearest supported voice for the selected language and applies your speed and pitch settings. The result is intelligible but more synthetic, which is expected.
Is there a limit on how much text I can read aloud?
Playback handles long articles because the text is split into sentence-sized chunks and queued automatically. Only the WAV download has a cap, set at 5,000 characters per file, and longer text is refused with a message. Split a long document into sections if you need audio files for all of it.
Is my text uploaded or is my microphone used?
Speech is synthesized locally by your browser or by the bundled engine, and the tool never asks for microphone access or records audio. Pasted drafts, scripts, and private notes are not sent to a server. Closing the page clears the text.
Can I change speed and pitch while it is playing?
Speed ranges from 0.5x to 2x and pitch from 0.5 to 1.5, and both are set with sliders before or during playback. A change applies when the next sentence chunk starts, so use Stop and then Play to hear the whole passage at the new setting. Pause, Resume, and Stop controls are also available.
